Why We’re All Responsible for Building the Playground Our Kids Deserve
By Leah M. Reynolds

You don’t have to have children to care about building a better community for them. My wife and I don’t have young kids at home. Our grandchildren live across the country. But when we walk through Battery Park and imagine what’s possible, we feel the same sense of urgency and responsibility that any member of our community might. We believe that creating an inclusive, accessible playground is one of the most meaningful investments we can make — for the children of this town and for the kind of place we all say we want to live in.

Historic New Castle is one of the most beautifully preserved cities in the country. With over 600 historic structures, we have honored our past. Now it’s time to honor our future.

The Battery Park Playground project is a once-in-a-generation opportunity. Led by the Old New Castle Outdoor Recreation Coalition (ONCOR), this initiative will create a safe, vibrant space where all children — regardless of ability — can play, imagine, and connect. The new design includes smooth rubberized surfaces for mobility, a “tall ship” climbing structure that reflects our maritime history, and play features that encourage interaction, learning, and movement.

This is not just about swings and slides. It’s about inclusion. It’s about creating a visible and physical reminder that every child belongs. And it’s about each of us, regardless of age or family status, stepping up to do our part.

We’re proud to share that ONCOR has already raised over $1 million of the $1.2 million budget thanks to grants and generous neighbors. We are so close — just $125,000 to go. To cross the finish line, we’re asking 2,000 people to donate $100 each.

That might sound like a big ask. But think about what $100 means: It’s a seat at the table. A stake in our community’s shared future. It’s a way of saying, “Yes — I believe in a town where all children can play side by side.” If you can give more, please do. If you can give less, know that every single dollar gets us closer.

We have a responsibility to each other — and especially to our youngest — to build places where they can be safe, joyful, and included. A playground might seem simple, but it can transform lives. It invites families to gather, builds friendships, fosters independence, and sends a message that every child matters.

Please join us. Be part of something beautiful and lasting.

To donate, visit oncorcoalition.org or mail a check to ONCOR Coalition, PO Box 211, New Castle, DE 19720. ONCOR is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit and all gifts are tax-deductible.

Let’s build a playground that reflects the best of who we are — and who we want to be.
